Indian passport photo requirements: what Passport Seva checks
Passport Seva portal requires a square JPEG photo between 350 and 1000 pixels on each side, file size between 20 KB and 100 KB, with a pure white background. The face should fill 70–80% of the frame with both eyes clearly visible. This tool resizes your photo to 800×800 pixels, optionally removes the background and replaces it with white, then compresses to meet the file size requirement.

- 5
Download and upload to Passport Seva portal.
Why passport photo background matters more than people think
The Passport Seva portal does automated background validation. A non-white background — even a very light beige or off-white — can trigger a rejection at the automated screening stage. The rejection message is usually generic ("photo not meeting requirements"), which frustrates applicants who don't realise the background colour is the problem.
If you took your photo at home against a wall that looks white to the eye but is actually off-white or warm-toned under indoor lighting, the portal may still reject it. The background removal feature in this tool flood-fills from the edges with a tolerance of 35 — meaning pixels within 35 colour units of white are replaced. This catches most off-white, light beige, and light grey backgrounds.
For best results with background removal: take the photo against a flat wall with even lighting (no shadows), and upload the photo uncropped so the edge pixels are background, not clothing or hair.
